Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the liquid part of blood remaining after the removal of the cellular fraction and coagulation factors. It is extracted by centrifuging aseptically collected, coagulated fetal bovine blood. Sterile FBS is achieved through triple filtration at 0.1µm.
FBS contains proteins and growth factors essential for maintaining and proliferating eukaryotic cells in vitro. It also has attachment factors that create a “coating” effect on plastic surfaces, enhancing cell adhesion. These components make FBS indispensable in cell culture.
All FBS batches are tested for endotoxin and mycoplasma levels, specific viruses (BVD), hemoglobin, total protein content, and cell culture performance.
